Refusing to believe the inevitable truth, you doggedly trod up and down rows of cars, refusing to give in to feeling foolish for having lost your car, and fighting the rising panic that tells you repeatedly that there is another option.

• When at home, keep your vehicle in your garage
• Don’t leave valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen

Common sense may ward off amateur thieves, but it won’t stop the professionals.
